Hair How-To: Knotted Bun
Get the look of a model off-duty with this half-up style
Full of body and life, the knotted bun is a trendy take on the half bun “Hun” style that will keep you looking and feeling cool all summer long. Aveda Artist Frank Rizzieri created this knotted bun for personal style blogger and #AvedaPartner Lua Perez-Garreaud (seen above) when we invited her into Frank’s salon FOURTEENJAY in New York City.
“Lua is low key and likes a laid back vibe,” Frank says. “This style gives her that funky model off-duty look that is fluid with a bohemian edge. It’s also quick and easy for anyone to recreate.”
Here, Frank shares the steps to the look:
Step 1: Prep damp hair with Thickening Tonic to create volume. With blow dryer on cool, run fingers lightly through strands to help dry hair.
Step 2: Apply Shampure™ Dry Shampoo to the roots; use a wide tooth comb to disperse the powder from roots to ends to provide grip and additional texture.
Step 3: Starting at the top of the head, gather two sections of hair from the temples on either side of the head and pull the sections loosely back to meet in the middle and tie a knot. Allow some strands to fall naturally from the front. Depending on the length of the hair, continue to knot the hair until there is 2 inches of hair left on the ends. Once the knotting is complete, secure the style with a bobby pin going horizontally over the knot.
Step 4: Gather the remaining hair that was not knotted in the top two sections and begin a new knot below the first one (using the same knotting technique as above.) This step depends on size of your head, and thickness and length of hair. If hair is shorter, you may leave the remainder loose.
Step 5: With the knotted bun now secure, set the style with a light spray of Air Control™ Hair Spray.
